The Grip
Tightening and loosening The depth of the ball is determined by the part of the hand that has greater grip control. The palm has two ways to grip the racquet-- either with the forefinger and thumb or with the little, ring and middle fingers.
Using the forefinger and thumb together is called using the "pinchers". The bottom three fingers are called the "squeezers".
Forehand
For greater depth tighten the "squeezers" on the forward swing. For a short cross-court shot, use the "pinchers".
Service
The grip is held loosely on the backswing. As the racquet lifts to the point of contact, the "pinchers" tighten rotating the forearm and snapping up to the ball for control and placement.
Volley
The Continental grip is the correct grip for the volley; however, the face of the racquet is changed by using the "grippers" and "pinchers". On the forehand the "grippers" are the ones controlling and tightening (which turns the grip into the Eastern forehand) and on the backhand the "pinchers" are the control fingers and add a slight underspin.
Golden Rule
The grip on each stroke is held loosely on the backswing and part of the hand tightens to control the angle of the racquet face on the forward swing. Note: If constant tension is held, the arm fatigues and it is difficult to keep a steady grip at ball contact.
If you find a loss of ability to place the ball, check to see if you are tightening the grip just before contact. The grip should gain control (be tightened) as the forward swing is beginning.
